Embroidery: Owl be there for you

Once upon a time this illustration by Verity Wilson was used on an Element t-shirt. Her super-sweet brother, Dustin, asked me to use it as inspiration for her Christmas present and so it now it lives on, in cheerful colour, on a pillowcase.

It's a little different from what I usually do - in that I illustrated it straight onto fabric without the use of a reference. I don't always trust my drawing skills but I'm very happy with the outcome here.

Embroidery: The big burger

For years I have been working on and off in a burger restaurant, where I have made some of the most wonderful friends. One of which commissioned me to make this. The burger pillow!

Embroidery: Pineapple

Ive had a few commissions over Christmas and been sitting on some things I'd LOVE to share. Finally everyone is gifted and now I can spread the stitching love.

I found a wonderful little DIY print section in a Frankie magazine and created my first 'custom print background'. Tropical no?

Petite Noir / Embroidery

A few years ago I had portraits of Petite Noir published in The Rolling Stone Magaine. As part of my InAwe Residence, I completed this embroidery of Yannick. I think its one of my favourites and definitely think its FAR more effective when they are smaller.

IneAwe Stays: Self portrait embroidery

Last week Thursday an interview by Josh Hayman from my first (on many I hope) residency with 10and5 and InAwe Stays was launched. It was a real gift to plug out of life for a week and stay in SUCH a beautiful space and just sew my life away.

It took about a day to scrape myself off the heated floor and get myself going. I finished off a piece from an image from a shoot I did for Rolling Stones years ago, and my largest yet, a self portrait. It was my  Cape Town inspired piece for the residence.

The reference image for my piece was taken by Lesca Steyn. Any time Ive worked with her its been such a seemless process.

You can view the article on 10and5, and the other artists involved in the programme here

Khumba custom shoes

Triggerfish have brought us another full animated feature Khumba. Its a kids movie, and as part of their launch in America have come up with a few activities and competitions to surround it. One behind customised shoes I was asked to do. I did these zebra striped babies much to the expense of my housemates deep fear of glitter which is now embedded in the carpets.

This stop motion was just launched with a competion. These are my little hands at their happiest!

Flamingo embroidery: The thread sketch gets bigger

Finally was able to put the finishing touches on my most recent thread sketch. This one has taken me FOREVER. Partly because I have been busy on other (amazing) projects, and partly because in my infinite wisdom, decided to do this one a4. It is slightly smaller due to the tension of all the embroidery.

I have used different thread mediums with this, so there is a little more texture in it. Im still going to decide on the best way to stretch it, or leave that up to the (potential) buyer.

Also, I am obsessed with flamingos as you can see by my tattoo that is by Tyler from Sins of Styles.

A Snake for Jake

Jakobsnake turned 28 on Thursday. I made him this Thread sketch/ embroidery. Im still not sure what to call it. This photo was taken from an iphone and the reference was an ipad wallpaper.

More Make more/ Give more

Its been a while since the Ive had time to exercise my 'Make More, Give More' resolution. Last night I made this little guy and gave it to Minouw, a very talented and somewhat eccentric friend and college of mine. 'Scuse the quality of photo.

The Collective Silent Auction: Threadsketch

I've been asked to donate work for The Collective happening at Side Street Studios tomorrow night.

I mounted the most recent thread sketch I did  and gave it to Max Mogale while he is was being filmed. In my infinitely nerdy, completely over confident way I managed to mention I fall asleep with needles and scissors in my bed, and thats how single I am. Class act.

Heres the exhibition:

The colour portrait- Threadsketch

I've been feeling out my new favorite medium. 'Drawing/ Painting with thread'. These are two portraits I finished a while ago. I have NO idea how I feel about them, but I had fun doing them non the less.

My aunt told me im not allowed to dabble with Embroidery. Apparently its creepy. Blood is not thicker then passion.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

Beers are people too

Last month I was blessed with the dream job. In collaboration with Justin Plunkett the master of all things beautiful I got to make outfits for beer bottles. It was for the Beer House, which opened two weeks ago on Long Street. So far it is stocking 99 beers from all over the world.

Ironically, there was a fair amount of wine involved in this process.

But enough about that, lets see what beers in outfits look like.

Your milk teeth miss you

I drew and made this little guy yesterday. Hes about 6 cm tall, i think im going to make more miniature toys and give them away. This ones for Kaeli.. happy birthday girl.

Harold the Imitable

As part of my new years revalation to 'Make more and give more' and also to curb some boredom, I made this little critter. I posted it on facebook and the first person to name him could have him.

'Harold the Imitable'. Thanks Kelly Howell, beautiful name!

Karmas amazing, while the post was loading I got a call to ask if I wanted dark room equipment. Give and get people.

The makings of a new year

I decided to mix things up this new year by doing NOTHING. So while on the couch with my boy I made a little toy. Might as well start the year off with a little productivity.

Laptop Case #1

Something, sitting on top of the todo list through at least three notebooks is 'make laptop case'... I even bought an Incase hardshell for my mac and this just toughened the task because now I couldn't just opt for the lazy option and buy one. Yes, Im a little pedantic over my computer, but it like a builders only hammer. Its my tool, and I treat it accordingly. LONG STORY SHORT.. I made a simple laptop case today. Using my favourite shwe-shwe as the lining and left overs from the toys i made for Hello Computer  for the exterior, I whipped together this little slip case.

You gotto keep your ports clean.
